The very presence of this observatory, together with the activities promoted, enriches the cultural offer of this area. It is known that our hills are the destination of a kind of tourism which is not touch and run and which is in search of the true face of our region through this duo of nature and culture. Therefore, this site was built and designed as a Multifunctional Observatory for specific functions in fields such as: Astronomy, Environment, Geo-seismic, Meteorological. The site chosen for the realization of the Observatory is in Montecorboli, near San Donato in Poggio. This area enjoys logistic and environmental characteristics which make it the ideal place for an Observatory:

  • complete absence of natural and artificial obstacles to observe the sky
  • 450 metres above sea level
  • moderate light pollution, practically null to the south
  • very low acoustic pollution. Darkness and silence, fundamental characteristics for a “good” observation of the sky, make the place extremely  suitable also  for the installation of a seismic station and a meteorological one
  • the presence of a vast green area on an elevated site. The Observatory is in the Botanic gardens which spread over 5 hectares and offer a vast collection of botanic species of our region. There are a great number of paths full of effective descriptive panels.
