Castello di Fonterutoli

The estate of “Castello di Fonterutoli” is situated in Castellina in Chianti (Siena), in the heart of the Chianti Classico on the hills which face the Val d’Elsa. The property of the Mazzei family since 1435, the estate still holds its original aspect of a quiet country hamlet: a few houses, the church of San Miniato and the Villa built at the end of 1500 instead of the fortified castle. It was here, at Fonterutoli, in 1202 and 1208, that the peace treaties which defined the historic assigning of the Chianti to the area of the Florentine Republic were signed.

The estate today covers an area of 650 hectares. The new cellar, operating as from 2006, has already been defined as “the most impressive of all the Chianti” (Steven Spurrier “Decanter”). Of particular impact is the “barriccaia”, with exposed rock walls, which contains 3,500 barriques as well as those held in the ancient cellars of the hamlet. Two DOCG Chianti Classico wines are produced here and a Chianti Classico Reserve.
