Located on a hill dominating the territory, the Medici fortress of Poggio Imperiale (at Poggibonsi, Siena) was built upon a project by Giuliano da Sangallo between 1488 and 1511 and it is the most important construction amongst those planned by Lorenzo il Magnifico to strengthen the territorial defenses. Not only was it planned to build an extremely strong military post on the hill but also a new city with a fortified citadel. However, the project was not fully completed and therefore the urban centre was never realized. On the contrary, a pentagon-shaped keep was built which, now  restored, dominates the surrounding hills.

Very close is the beautiful Fonte di Vallepiatta, called Fonte delle Fate (Fairies’ water fount). A large public water fount (the largest in size in all the Sienese area) which has been completely restored, cleaned and brought to ancient splendor. It hosts the permanent contemporary art installation “I coccodrilli” (The crocodiles) by Mimmo Paladino.
